KIRKPINAR OIL WRESTLING FESTIVAL
Kirkpinar Oil Wrestling was born in Rumeli in 14th century. It is one of the oldest festivals in the world still being held for 648 years. The persons whom oil their body and wrestle are called “pehlivan” (wrestler). Pehlivan character is a significant identity element for Turks. Wrestling and festivals are being held in the arenas called “er meydanı” (contest field). This event performed with a series of ceremonies and rituals by pehlivan, wrestling master, announcer, drummer, oiler, pesgirci (person manufacturing/selling towels) is watched with enthusiasm in Turkey.
