This art is an important branch of the Turkish public art. It developed remarkably in 19th and 20th centuries and became popular because of its religious themes. It is believed that the paintings have protective power for people against evil eye, diseases and all kinds of disasters and bring fortune and wealth. For example, the painting of Sahmeran which is half-human, half-snake and the symbol of wisdom is believed to bring fortune and health to the house it is put on.
